What is the difference between a washstand, console basin and wall hung basin?

Manufacturers and retailers sometimes use the terms "washstand" and "console basin" for similar products. Both can describe a basin paired with legs, brackets or an open frame, although their fixing and supporting arrangements vary.

A wall hung basin fixes to the wall without a floorstanding frame. With a stand mounted basin, the wall fixings, frame or both may support the basin.

 

What are the benefits of a washstand?

A washstand gives you a more open alternative to enclosed bathroom vanity units. The frame also becomes part of the design, while selected models add a towel rail or open shelf.

Open storage keeps items easy to reach, but it does not hide toiletries or pipework in the same way as a vanity unit. Check what the individual washstand includes and decide whether you prefer open or enclosed storage.

 

Do washstands suit modern as well as traditional bathrooms?

Yes. Washstands with ornate frames can create a period-style look, especially when paired with traditional bathroom taps. A compact washstand can suit an en-suite, cloakroom, smaller bathroom or downstairs toilet. Its open frame may make the room feel less enclosed, but it does not necessarily take up less physical space than other basin types.

 

What materials are stand mounted basins made from?

The basin, frame and shelf may use different materials. The basin may be ceramic or porcelain, while the stand is often metal with a finish such as chrome, matt black or brushed brass. Some designs also include an open shelf made from another material.

There is no single best combination. Check the specification and care instructions for each component, particularly if the frame or shelf will regularly come into contact with water.

 

Can I replace my existing basin with a washstand?

Usually, but check the washstand's complete width, projection and frame footprint first. You should also compare the existing pipe positions with the space behind the basin and frame, as open designs may leave more of the plumbing visible.

Check how the basin and stand must attach to the wall and floor and whether the wall can take the required fixings. Removing the old basin may also expose previous fixing holes, unfinished flooring or marks that the new frame will not cover.
