Choosing a macerator for a new bathroom or replacing an old one? These answers cover which fittings it can serve, where it will fit and what to expect when it runs.

 

Can one macerator take waste from my toilet, basin and shower?

Some can. A toilet-only model won't necessarily take waste from a basin or shower, while others have extra inlets for several fittings. Pumps made for basins, showers or utility appliances may not take toilet waste.

 

How far can a macerator pump waste?

It depends on the model and the route to your soil pipe. Each unit has stated limits for pumping across and upwards, and the pipe size it needs can vary too. If the pipe needs to travel both up and across, your installer can use the product's guidance to work out whether it suits the route. 

 

Will a macerator fit behind my toilet or inside bathroom furniture?

Some macerators are designed for tight spaces, including slimline units that fit behind a toilet and units that can be concealed in furniture. The dimensions tell you how much room the unit needs, but leave space for its pipes and access for future maintenance too.

 

Can I replace my old macerator with a different model?

Yes, but it may not be a straight swap. The new unit might fit your existing pipework, or it might need a few alterations. The size of the unit and the position of its connections will tell you how closely it matches your current macerator.

 

Are macerators noisy?

You'll hear a macerator while it pumps, but how loud it seems depends on the model and where it's fitted. If you're replacing one, a newer unit won't necessarily be quieter than your old one. Some products state a noise level to help you compare, although it may sound different once fitted in your room.
