Choosing a bathroom basin involves more than finding a design you like. These FAQs cover the main basin types, measurements, tap hole options and installation considerations.

 

How do I choose the right basin?

Start with how and where the basin will be fitted. It may need a suitable wall, pedestal, stand, worktop or unit. Decide whether you want storage and whether the pipework should remain visible or be concealed.

Choose your tap arrangement at the same time so the basin has the correct number of tap holes. You should also consider who will use it and how much room they need around it.

What size bathroom basin do I need?

Before buying a new basin, check the available width and projection from the wall, along with the usable width and depth of the bowl. Allow enough clearance to stand at the basin and open nearby doors, drawers and shower enclosures.

In a narrow room, projection may matter more than width. For example, a basin that sticks out too far can make the room feel tight, especially in narrower spaces. If you're swapping out an old basin, you'll also likely need to work around the existing pipework and layout.

 

What are the different types of basins?

The main options include:

• Pedestal basins: Pair the basin with a floorstanding pedestal that conceals the pipework.
• Wall hung basins: Attach to a suitable wall without furniture or a pedestal beneath.
• Countertop basins: Sit on a compatible worktop or vanity unit.
• Inset basins: Fit within a worktop cut-out, usually with a rim that rests on or overlaps the surface.
• Undercounter basins: Mount beneath a suitable worktop for a clear surface around the bowl.
• Semi recessed basins: Fit partly into shallower furniture while the bowl projects beyond the front.
• Console basins: Pair a basin with an open frame or legs in traditional or contemporary styles.

 

How many tap holes does my basin need?

Choose the tap arrangement first, then select a compatible basin:

• No tap holes normally suits wall mounted (or worktop-mounted) taps.
• A one hole basin normally needs a monobloc mixer.
• A two hole basin commonly needs separate pillar taps or a compatible two-hole mixer.
• A three hole basin has separate positions for the hot control, cold control and central spout.

If you choose wall mounted basin taps, check that the spout will reach the bowl correctly.

 

What height should a bathroom sink be fitted at?

There is no single height that suits every basin or user. Consider who will use it, the basin's overall height, the pipe positions and anything fitted above it.

A countertop basin adds height above its worktop, while a full pedestal basin uses the height of its compatible pedestal. Wallhung models offer more choice during installation. Ask an experienced installer for guidance if you have specific accessibility requirements.

 

Can I install a basin myself?

A like-for-like DIY replacement may be manageable if you have suitable plumbing and installation experience. Moving pipework, cutting a worktop, altering furniture or assessing a supporting wall makes the job more difficult.
