Looks great and easy to fit
28th July 2026We have just installed the Sandringham inset basin in the shower room of our narrow boat. It looks great and works fine. It was relatively easy to fit even for an amateur plumber.

FAQ's
An inset basin sits within a cut-out in the worktop, usually with its rim resting on the surrounding surface. These FAQs explain how to check the fit, replace an old basin and make sure you leave enough room around it.
How do I measure for an inset basin?
Getting the measurements right is especially important with an inset basin because it needs to fit into the worktop or vanity unit. Check the basin's overall width and depth, but do not use these measurements to calculate the cut-out. Follow the manufacturer's dimensions or cutting template, as the required opening will be smaller than the basin and specific to its shape.
Make sure there is enough worktop around the opening to support the basin. Below it, check for cabinet rails, drawers, shelves, pipework and waste fittings that could obstruct the bowl.
If you are replacing a basin, measure the existing opening rather than assuming that a similarly sized model will fit. The new basin's rim must also be wide enough to cover the cut-out fully.
Can I replace an inset basin without replacing the vanity unit?
You may be able to keep the existing vanity unit or worktop if it remains in good condition. Check for swelling, water damage or weakness around the opening before fitting a new inset basin.
The new basin must suit the size and shape of the existing cut-out, cover its edges and fit within the available space below. An oval basin may require a very different opening from a square or rectangular model, even when their overall dimensions are similar. A smaller opening may sometimes be enlarged, but an oversized or differently shaped cut-out can be harder to adapt safely.
Are inset basins easy to install?
Installation may be straightforward when the worktop already has the correct opening. Cutting a new one requires more care, as you must position the basin without weakening the worktop or obstructing the cabinet, drawers or pipework below.
Use the manufacturer's cutting template where one is supplied. Follow the fitting instructions to support and secure the basin, seal exposed worktop edges against moisture and seal around the rim to stop water entering the cut-out.
The cutting method will depend on the worktop material. For example, you may need to ask an experienced installer or fabricator to cut specialist surfaces such as stone or quartz.
How deep should an inset basin be?
There's no perfect depth, but the bowl needs to be deep enough to allow you to wash your hands without taking up more room beneath the worktop than you have available. A deeper bowl can also help keep splashes contained, so check the bowl depth as well as the overall dimensions when comparing a small inset basin with a larger option.
Will an inset basin leave enough countertop space?
That depends on the size of the basin and where it sits within the worktop. Check how much usable surface will remain at the sides and behind it for toiletries and, where required, a deck mounted tap.
Allow enough clearance between the basin and any wall or splashback so that you can clean around the rim. A larger inset basin provides more bowl space, while a more compact model can leave you with more usable countertop space.
