FAQ's
Fireplace tiles are a chance to turn your hearth into a true focal point. Whether you’re after cosy cottage vibes, bold Victorian patterns or a clean modern finish, the right tiles can completely shift the mood of your room. Here’s what you need to know.
What are fireplace tiles?
These are tiles made to handle the heat. They’re designed for use around fires, stoves or hearths and need to be heat resistant, hardwearing and easy to clean. That’s why most are made from porcelain or ceramic.
Unlike stone or bare brick, tiles don’t stain with soot, don’t need sealing and are quick to wipe down. This makes them ideal if your fire sees regular use.
Style-wise, tiles give you loads of options, from rustic brick slips to glossy metro tiles or encaustic-style patterns that bring instant period charm.
Can all tiles be used around a fireplace?
Not quite. Porcelain tiles are your best bet, as they are tough, heat-resistant and built for busy spaces. Ceramic tiles are fine for vertical areas like the chimney breast or inner surround but not for floors or heavy-use fireplaces. Brick slips (thin-cut brick tiles) are great for that classic, characterful finish.
If they’re going under a stove or in front of an open fire, opt for porcelain tiles rated for floor use with matt or textured finishes. Smooth glossy tiles and heat don’t mix well, as they can get slippery. However, if your fireplace is purely decorative (no actual heat), you’ve got free rein.
What tile styles work best around fireplaces?
That depends on the look you’re after:
- Classic Victorian homes. Opt for encaustic-style patterns, checkerboard layouts and deep green or navy glazes.
- Rustic spaces. Choose brick slips, terracotta tones and handmade-style textures.
- Modern minimalism. Try slim glazed tiles stacked vertically for a sharp finish.
- Industrial interiors. Choose charcoal, smoke grey or concrete effect tiles with black stoves or metal accents.
The fireplace naturally draws the eye, so lean into it and let it set the tone for the room.
