Are slate effect tiles durable?

Absolutely. Our slate effect tiles are made from porcelain or ceramic, so they're tough, hard-wearing and built for busy spaces. When used in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways or even outdoors, they can handle it. 

Just remember that a wall tile shouldn't be used on a floor simply because it has a slate effect, while only tiles specifically marked for outdoor use should be fitted on patios, steps or pathways.

 

Do they look like real slate?

They really do. Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques and textured finishes, you get that natural slate look without them actually being made from quarried stone. They have all the character and variation without the uneven surfaces or crumbly edges. Some have a more pronounced rustic surface, while others give you a flatter finish.

 

Can I use them in bathrooms and wet rooms?

Yes, they look amazing in those spaces. The natural stone look adds spa vibes, while the material keeps things water-resistant and easy to maintain.

However, while a matt, rustic or textured slate appearance may provide additional grip, the finish alone does not mean the tile is suitable for a wet floor. Do slate effect tiles work outdoors?

Some do; just check the product details. Outdoor tiles are usually porcelain with high slip resistance. If you're tiling a patio, steps or porch, go for a tile that's specifically marked for outdoor use. They're built to handle weather and wear without fading or flaking.

 

Do slate effect tiles need sealing?

No. Real slate needs sealing to stay protected from moisture and stains. Slate effect tiles already have a sealed, non-porous surface, so there's nothing extra to do.

However, check the grout guidance separately, as its sealing and care requirements may differ from those of the tile.

 

Which size should I choose?

Tile size sets the tone:

• Large format tiles (e.g. 600 by 600 or 600 by 900mm): Minimal grout lines, modern and clean.
• Mid-size tiles (e.g. 300 by 600mm): A classic all-rounder for walls and floors.
• Slim tiles (e.g. 70 by 280mm): Great for feature walls when you want to add depth and drama.
