Rectified tiles are all about clean edges and neatly aligned grout joints. Here's what makes them different and what to check before choosing and fitting yours.

 

What are rectified tiles?

Rectified tiles are tiles that have been mechanically trimmed after firing, so every edge is perfectly straight and dimensions are consistent. The result is tighter grout joints (usually 2 to 3mm) and a clean look you can't get from cushioned or uneven edges.

 

Do rectified tiles work best on walls or floors?

Both. Use 300 by 600mm rectified wall tiles for a grid-like layout. Go for 600 by 600mm or 600 by 1200mm rectified floor tiles to get that expansive feel. In small rooms, the precise edges help the space feel more open. In large rooms, they create an architectural vibe.

 

Are rectified tiles harder to install?

Rectified tiles can be less forgiving than standard tiles, so good preparation is key:

• Make sure the wall or floor is flat and properly prepared.
• Measure several tiles before setting out, as small size differences may still occur.
• Follow the recommended grout width rather than laying the tiles tightly together.
• Dry-lay the tiles first to plan the grout lines and avoid awkward cuts around doors and corners.
• Use suitable cutting equipment and adhesive for the tile's material and size.
• For large format tiles, use an appropriate levelling system and make sure the adhesive provides the required coverage.

 

Do rectified tiles need special grout?

Flexible grout works best for keeping joints clean and crack-free. Always allow for movement; no tile can be laid completely tight.

 

Do I get fewer grout lines with rectified tiles?

Rectified edges do not reduce the number of grout lines, but they can allow for narrower and more consistent joints. This creates the clean, almost seamless look often associated with rectified tiles.

If you want fewer grout lines overall, choose a larger tile size. Even rectified tiles still need grout joints to allow for installation tolerances and movement, so they should never be laid completely edge to edge.
