What are split face tiles?
Split face tiles are textured wall tiles made from small stone or stone effect strips layered at different depths, giving them that signature 3D, stacked-stone look. Originally, they were made from natural stone (and many still are), but there are also porcelain and ceramic versions that deliver the same rugged texture without the weight, sealing or upkeep of real stone. They’re ideal for feature walls and chimney breasts but also work well in many other spaces throughout the home.
What interiors do split face tiles work well in?
Split face wall tiles are very versatile; it all comes down to the colour and texture you go for:
- Choose warm greys and beige blends for bathrooms and relaxed living spaces
- Opt for charcoal and deep graphite for old, industrial or modern statement walls
- Choose rustic browns and mixed stone for heritage or earthy interiors

Can I use split face wall tiles in a shower?
Real stone split face tiles aren’t the best choice inside a shower. They’re uneven, tricky to seal properly and can trap moisture in the small gaps. Porcelain or ceramic split face effect tiles, however, are shower-friendly. They give you the textured look without the porous surface, so they’re water-resistant and easier to clean.
