If you're a fan of period dramas, such as Downtown Abbey or Pride and Prejudice you'll have no doubt spied a high level toilet lurking in the background during a bathroom scene at some point. They're those grand looking items which place the cistern high above its usual position, giving off a fantastic traditional aesthetic. In this guide we'll be explaining what's included with one, and whether or not they would look right in your bathroom.

So what does a high level toilet comprise of?

A high level toilet will usually comprise of a pan, seat, and a cistern which is fixed high up the wall and connected by a metal flush pipe. They have a genuine regal feel about them and can be the ideal finishing touch if you want to replicate a period bathroom that has a real air of authenticity to it.

The great thing about these toilets is that there are so many versions available that it's quite easy to get something which is unique to your bathroom. Cisterns can be supplied in various colours and finishes or even inscribed with custom logos and designs for a truly bespoke finish. The seats can also be upgraded, with wooden throne items adding a fantastic element. Besides this, items such as cistern and seat brackets are also available in gorgeous, ornate designs to complete the look.

Is a high level toilet for me?

The first thing you need to consider is the overall style of your bathroom. If you have a hyper-modern look going on then a high level WC is going to stick out for all the wrong reasons. However, if you've gone for a classically influenced look then one of these items may just be what you've been searching for.

Also take into account the amount of space you have available. If your bathroom is on the smaller end of the scale it may be best to instead go for a more conventional close coupled toilet. However, a compromise can be reached as there are low and medium level toilets out there that feature a very similar appearance but are more practical for small bathrooms or cloakrooms.

Ultimately, if you want to put together a room which has all the charm and sophistication of a Victorian setting, then installing a high level toilet is a fantastic way to create a room which will remain timeless in its appeal. Just make sure you take some accurate measurements of the room first!
