FAQ's

Laminate is the fuss-free way to get great looking floors, fast. It’s hardwearing, budget-friendly and a breeze to fit with its click-together design. If you’re unsure about thickness, underlay, where to use it or how long it’ll last, this guide has you covered, so you can get those boards down without the drama.

Is laminate okay for bathrooms?

Standard laminate doesn’t do well with standing water. For splash-prone areas, go for a water-resistant or waterproof laminate and follow the fitting instructions closely, especially around the edges and joins. For inside showers, stick to tiles instead.

Can I use laminate with underfloor heating?

Yes, many options are compatible with underfloor heating. Just use the right underlay, keep surface temperatures below 27°C and bring the system up slowly (increase the heat gradually over a few days). Always check the product specifications to be sure.

How thick should laminate flooring be?

Most laminate falls between 8mm and 12mm thick. Thicker boards (around 12mm) feel more solid and help reduce that hollow tapping noise, making them perfect for living rooms, hallways and busy spaces. 8mm is a great choice for bedrooms or lighter-use areas and still gives a neat, durable finish.

Can you lay laminate without underlay?

No; underlay is essential. It adds comfort, reduces noise, evens out minor floor imperfection and acts as a moisture barrier (especially important on concrete). Skipping it can lead to creaks, shifting boards and swollen edges. Some laminates come with pre-attached underlay; if yours does, you're ready to go.

Can you lay laminate flooring directly on plywood?

Yes, as long as the plywood is flat, dry, clean and firmly fixed. You’ll still need to add the right underlay on top. Don’t glue laminate to the plywood, as it’s designed to float. Gluing it down can cause problems and may void your warranty.

How long should laminate flooring last?

You can expect it to last around 10 to 25 years, depending on the board quality, how well it’s installed and how much wear it gets. Thicker boards and tough wear layers tend to last longer. A few good habits, like using doormats, adding felt pads under furniture and sweeping up grit, go a long way in keeping it looking great.
