What are anti slip rated tiles?

Anti slip rated tiles are floor tiles that have all been tested and rated for slip resistance in order to aid in safety underfoot. These ratings, commonly shown as R ratings, have ratings of R9 to R13 to show how much grip a tile will provide in an area subject to moisture or heavy foot traffic. The following list shows what the various levels of slip ratings are designed for:

• R9 tiles offer the least slip resistance and would only be suited for totally dry indoor areas, such as living spaces and dining rooms.
• R10 is viewed as a moderate slip resistance and is suitable for use as kitchen floor tiles or in hallways, as well as low traffic bathrooms.
• R11 provides a more reliable slip resistance, so suitable for use as bathroom floor tiles or in wet rooms
• R12 and R13 provide high grip, and are commonly used in commercial wet areas such as pool surrounds or gym showers.

Are gloss tiles more slippery than matt options?

Yes, gloss tiles are typically slippery than matt ones, particularly when wet! Gloss tiles have a smooth surface that reflects light beautifully and are easy to clean. However, they do not provide much grip underfoot, making them less appropriate for use in slippery areas. Matt tiles, on the other hand, have a more textured finish that provides better traction, and are safer for use on floors prone to moisture or in high traffic areas.

Where can anti slip tiles be placed?

Non slip tiles can be used in virtually any location, indoors or outdoors. In dry living areas, such as dining rooms, tiles with lower slip ratings can still offer an added element of safety. In kitchens and bathrooms, tiles with a slightly higher level of grip help prevent spills and splashes from turning the floor into a hazard. Wet rooms and walk-in showers require some degree of slip resistance to accommodate wet feet, while outdoor areas like patios benefit from higher slip ratings to ensure secure footing in all weather conditions.
