Bathroom Bins

It might not be the most glamorous bathroom accessory, but the right bin makes a world of difference. Whether you're wondering if you really need one, what type to choose or which materials work best, we've got you covered with everything you need to know before you buy.

Should you have a bin in your bathroom?

A bathroom bin gives tissues, cotton pads, wipes, sanitary products, toilet roll tubes and empty toiletry packaging a proper place to go. Many of these items shouldn't be flushed, as they can cause blocked toilets and drains.

Keeping a dedicated bin nearby also stops waste from building up on floors, shelves or worktops. It helps contain clutter and germs, keeping your bathroom cleaner, tidier and easier to use.

What size bathroom bin do I need?

Compact bathroom bins of around 2.3L, 3L or 5L are ideal for cloakrooms, en-suites and small bathrooms. They can sit neatly in a tight corner, on a shelf or worktop, beneath a basin or beside the toilet.

Smaller bins need emptying more regularly, which helps stop waste and unpleasant smells from building up. Larger capacity bins may be more practical in busy family bathrooms or households that produce more waste.

What type of bathroom bin should I choose?

Bathroom bins are available with pedal, push top, touch top, slide, open top and stay open lids. Bathroom pedal bins provide hands-free opening, while open designs make it easier to dispose of several items at once. Push top, touch top and slide lids keep the contents covered between uses.

Think about where the bin will sit, as well as how you want it to open. Slimline bins work well in narrow corners, wall mounted options free up floor space and can make cleaning easier, while decorative designs can be displayed beside the basin or toilet. Simpler bins can also be tucked discreetly inside a vanity unit.

Can I keep the bin liner out of sight?

Yes, with selected designs. Some bathroom bins have an outer cover or a deep rim that hides the edge of the bag, so it doesn't hang over the sides. A few also have a separate space for spare liners, keeping them close by when it's time to empty the bin.

What materials are bathroom bins made from?

Bathroom bins are available in plastic, stainless steel, other metals, resin, bamboo and wood effect materials. You'll also find chrome, copper, marble effect, metallic, matt and fingerprint-resistant finishes.

Plastic is lightweight and easy to clean, while stainless steel bathroom bins offer greater durability. Bamboo and wooden lids bring warmth to tiled bathrooms, marble effect bins create a minimalist look and striped resin adds subtle texture with a contemporary finish.

Colours range from neutral, monochrome black, white and platinum designs to brighter shades and metallic finishes. This makes it easy to choose a bin that blends discreetly into your bathroom or stands out as a decorative accessory.

What are the most hygienic bathroom bins?

Pedal bins are one of the most hygienic choices because they open with your foot, reducing the need to touch the lid. A tightly closing lid keeps waste hidden and can help contain unpleasant smells.

Bathrooms are naturally humid, so close-fitting lids and neat rims can help protect the contents from moisture and condensation. Removable inner buckets and wipe-clean surfaces also make the bin easier to empty, wash and keep hygienic.
