FAQ's
Rectangular tiles give you plenty of ways to make a wall or floor your own. Here's how to choose a layout you'll love and make sure your tiles are right for the job.
Which way should I lay rectangular tiles?
That depends on the look you're going for. Lay them horizontally for a classic finish, stack them vertically for something more contemporary or stagger the rows to create a familiar brick-bond pattern. Some rectangular tiles can also be arranged in a herringbone pattern for a more eye-catching look.
Lay out a few tiles before you start so you can see how the pattern flows and where the cuts will fall. It's also worth checking the product guidance, as some longer tiles aren't suited to a 50:50 brick-bond layout. Need some inspiration? Take a look at our guide to bathroom tile patterns.
Can rectangular wall tiles be used on a floor?
Sometimes, but only when the tile is listed as suitable for floors. Rectangular wall tiles aren't designed to handle the same foot traffic as rectangular floor tiles so always check the product details before you buy. If you're planning to retile a bathroom, shower or wet room floor, then also check the tile's slip rating too. Our guide to tile anti-slip ratings explains what the different ratings mean.
