Metro Tiles
Metro Tiles
Metro wall tiles are popular choices for kitchens and bathrooms. These tiles, all of which are made from hard-wearing materials for long-lasting durability, are often nicknamed "subway tiles" or "metro tiles" in reference to those used in the London and New York underground systems. Revitalise your interior and complete your renovation with free standard UK delivery on orders over £499.
When it comes to laying metro tiles, a variety of patterns can be achieved. These rectangular tiles are highly versatile in larger spaces and are available in a wide range of styles and finishes. Whether you’re tiling a bathroom, kitchen, hallway or fireplace, we recommend hiring a professional to ensure the best results.
From timeless gloss whites and creams to bold pops of red, green and blue, metro tiles give you the freedom to play with colour. Soft pastels and marble effect tiles keep things subtle and sophisticated, while darker shades like black and deep grey add drama and contrast. Choose between glossy finishes that bounce light around the room or matt options for a modern edge.

Stonehouse green tiles
1st April 2026To have any kind of gap would be a very big grout area. I ended up putting them together. They are not particularly square and have a bit of a wavy profile. For my period property it kind of fits in well. The randomness of the colours are not all that random in the boxes and I wish I had paid more attention when putting them up as I ended up with kind of blocks of darker and lighter colours.

FAQ's
Metro tiles have been a design staple for over a century and there’s a reason they’re still everywhere. They’re clean, stylish, easy to pair with almost any look and simple to keep spotless. Whether you’re going classic white or getting playful with colour, here’s how to boss your metro tile project.
Are metro tiles still trending?
Absolutely. They adapt to whatever look you’re going for:
- Classic bathroom? Go white gloss with clean grout lines.
- Modern kitchen? Try coloured metro tiles with matching grout for a complementary vibe.
- Want texture? Ripple or crackle‑effect tiles add character without the fuss.
They’re timeless because they work with your design, not against it. Easy refresh? Change the grout colour or switch up the layout (herringbone, vertical stack, brick bond... you pick).
Do metro tiles need spacers?
Yes, you should always use spacers. Even if the tile has ridges, tile spacers keep everything consistent so your grout lines stay neat.
Are metro tiles easy to keep clean?
Yes, metro tiles are low effort, high reward. Their glazed surface means:
- Splashes wipe off easily
- Soap scum doesn’t cling
- They stay shiny without heavy cleaning
The tile grout gets more attention though. For best results:
- Seal your grout after installation (quick job, big impact)
- Go for grey grout if you want a look that stays sharper longer
- Run your extractor fan to reduce steam buildup in bathrooms
If you want “always‑fresh bathroom” energy, metro tiles are a very forgiving choice.
