Metro Tiles

Metro tiles have been a design staple for over a century and there's a reason they're still everywhere. They're clean, stylish, easy to pair with almost any look and simple to keep spotless. Whether you're going classic white or getting playful with colour, here's how to boss your metro tile project.

Are metro tiles still trending?

Absolutely. They adapt to whatever look you're going for:

• Classic bathroom? Go white gloss with clean grout lines.
• Modern kitchen? Try coloured metro tiles with matching grout for a complementary vibe.
• Want texture? Ripple or crackle‑effect tiles add character without the fuss.

They're timeless because they work with your design, not against it.

Will metro tiles look the same colour as the pictures?

Product photos are a useful starting point, but colour can look different under your own lighting. Some rustic metro tiles also have variations in tone from one tile to the next. If that variation matters to your design, look for photos showing several metro tiles together, then order a free sample and view it in the room at different times of day. A single sample will help you check the colour and finish, though it may not show every shade in the box.

Can I lay any metro tile in a herringbone pattern?

Metro tiles can be laid in brick bond, stacked and herringbone patterns, but check the tile before choosing your layout. Flat, even edges can make it easier to achieve the neat joins needed for herringbone. Bevelled or deliberately uneven edges create a different finish and may suit a brick bond layout better. Check the tile's dimensions and edge profile, then lay out a few tiles in your chosen pattern before fixing them. For examples of brick bond, stacked and herringbone layouts, see our guide to bathroom tile patterns.

Do metro tiles need spacers?

Yes, you should always use spacers. Even if the tile has ridges, tile spacers keep everything consistent so your grout lines stay neat.

Are metro tiles easy to keep clean?

Glazed metro tiles are generally straightforward to wipe down with a soft cloth and a cleaner suitable for the tile. Textured or crackle-effect finishes may need more attention around the edges and grout joints, where soap residue or grease can collect.
