What is tile adhesive?

Tile adhesive fixes tiles to a prepared surface, such as a wall or floor. The right type depends on the tile, the surface and where you’re tiling:

• Ready-mixed adhesive: Comes in a tub and is ready to use. It’s often used for ceramic wall tiles, but may not suit floors, porcelain or natural stone.
• Powdered adhesive: Usually cement-based, this is mixed with water before use. Different formulas are designed for walls or floors, and some suit porcelain, natural stone or larger tiles.
• Rapid-setting adhesive: A fast-setting powdered option that can let you grout sooner.
• Epoxy adhesive: A two-part adhesive that resists water and chemicals, so it’s often used in demanding commercial or industrial settings.

 

Does it matter what tile adhesive you use?

Yes, it really does. Different adhesives are made for different surfaces, tile types and room conditions.

For walls, ready mixed adhesive works well for lighter tiles like ceramics. For floors or heavier tiles, go for a powdered adhesive that you mix with water. It sets harder, grips better and handles both weight and foot traffic.

Many powdered adhesives are dual purpose and marked "Wall & Floor". Ready mixed pastes, on the other hand, are wall-only; they can't hold up under floor weight or pressure.

 

Is ready mixed tile adhesive easier to use?

Yes, it's ready to apply straight from the tub, with no powder to measure or mix. It's a handy option for suitable wall tiles, particularly smaller ceramic designs. For larger or heavier tiles, floors and wet areas, choose an adhesive specifically suited to the job.

 

What's the difference between flexible and standard adhesive?

Flexible adhesive can accommodate some movement in the surface beneath your tiles. It's often chosen for installations such as underfloor heating or suitably prepared timber floors, where changes in temperature or slight movement need to be considered. A standard adhesive may suit a stable surface and suitable wall tiles. The product details will tell you which tiles, surfaces and locations each adhesive is made for.

 

How long does tile adhesive take to dry?

Most powdered adhesives are ready to grout in just a few hours. Some "rapid set" options cure in just 60 to 90 minutes; great if you're in a hurry. Ready mixed adhesives take longer; usually 12 to 24 hours.

 

How thick should tile adhesive be applied?

There isn't one thickness for every tile. For wall tiles, adhesive should be applied at a thickness of around 2 to 4mm. For floor tiles, this really depends on tile size and how level the size is.

If the floor's uneven, using a self-levelling compound beforehand will save you a lot of time and hassle later on.
