Before you decide on your ideal look, read on to discover the main advantages and the answers to frequently asked questions about this style of tile.

What are stone effect tiles?

Stone effect tiles are porcelain or ceramic tiles that mimic the organic beauty of real stone, such as travertine, slate or limestone, without the need for the expensive upkeep that comes with it. They provide all the allure of natural materials with a much more useful twist.

Where can stone effect tiles be placed?

Versatile and durable, stone effect floor tiles are ideal for high traffic areas like kitchens and hallways, while stone effect wall tiles can add depth and texture to bathrooms or feature walls. For a seamless look, stone effect bathroom tiles and stone effect kitchen tiles are perfect for creating a coordinated finish across both floors and walls.

What finishes are there?

Stone effect tiles come in a range of finishes, including textured split face patterns and smooth matt finishes. Some evoke the rough beauty of slate or imitate the gentle grain of worn stone, while marble effect tiles mimic the luxurious veined look of real marble. Smooth tiles can create a contemporary look and are generally easier to wipe down, while textured and cobble effect designs provide more of the character associated with natural stone.

Will stone effect tiles vary in colour and pattern?

They can. Stone effect designs often include a mix of tones, veining and markings to create a more natural look. Order a free sample to check the colour and texture in your room, but remember that one sample may not show the full pattern.

Are stone effect tiles difficult to cut and fit?

Not necessarily. Most ceramic and porcelain options are fitted in much the same way as other tiles, although large format tiles and heavily textured or split face designs may need more careful handling and cutting.

Use equipment suited to the tile's material and allow extra for cuts and breakages. Before fitting, lay out tiles from several boxes so you can spread similar markings across the space and create a balanced finish.

Are stone effect tiles easy to clean?

Yes; porcelain and ceramic stone effect tiles are non-porous, stain-resistant and scratch-resistant, making them a breeze to keep clean. For floor tiles, a quick sweep and an occasional mop with a tile cleaner is usually all that's needed. Plus, no sealing is required. Textured finishes, however, may need a little more attention, as dirt can settle in the uneven surface.
