FAQ's
Picking the right ceramic tile can completely change the feel of a room. Once you know the basics, such as where ceramic tiles work best, how they wear and how to take care of them, it’s much easier to get results that last. Here’s a straightforward guide to help.
Are ceramic tiles better than porcelain tiles?
It depends on what you're after. Porcelain tiles are the tougher option; highly durable, low water absorption and great for bathrooms, kitchens, patios and high traffic floors. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and usually more budget-friendly. It comes in loads of colours and finishes, making it ideal for splashbacks, feature walls and everyday spaces.
Can ceramic tiles be used on floors?
Yes, but only if the individual tile is specified for floor use. Many ceramic tiles in this range are wall-only, so check the product details before buying. If you're tiling a bathroom floor, check its slip rating as well as its intended use; a matt finish alone doesn’t tell you how much grip it has. Our guide to using wall tiles on floors explains what else to check.
How long do ceramic tiles last?
There's no set lifespan for ceramic tiles. A tile chosen for the right surface, fitted properly and cared for as directed can last for many years. Wear will depend on where it’s used and, for ceramic floor tiles, how much traffic it gets.
What’s the difference between matt and gloss ceramic tiles?
Gloss tiles reflect more light and give a walls a polished look. Matt tiles have a less reflective finish, which can soften the look of a room. Neither finish tells you on its own whether a tile is suitable for a floor or how slip resistant it is. For a bathroom or kitchen floor, check the individual tile's intended use and slip rating.
Will ceramic tiles vary in colour?
Some ceramic tiles, especially rustic and handmade-effect designs, are made with subtle differences in shade or finish from tile to tile. That variation becomes more noticeable across a whole wall than in a single sample. Check the product photos and description, and order a free sample to see the colour in your room. If the design has varied shades, mix tiles from different boxes as you fit them to spread the tones across the wall.
Do ceramic tiles need sealing?
Most glazed tiles don't need sealing as the glaze itself acts as a seal. However, the grout does benefit from sealing, especially in areas like showers or kitchen splashbacks. Sealed grout is easier to clean and helps prevent staining.
What should I use to clean ceramic tiles?
Stick to the basics:
- Warm water and a gentle cleaner are usually all you need.
- Avoid bleach, ammonia or strong acidic cleaners, as they can wear down grout and glaze.
- Sweep or vacuum first to remove grit and prevent scratching.
Light, regular cleaning goes a long way. It keeps your ceramic tiles looking their best without the need for heavy scrubbing.
