FAQ's
Large format tiles are all about big impact with less fuss. They feature fewer grout lines, smoother surfaces and those sweeping marble, stone and concrete effects that look straight out of a boutique hotel. If you want a space that feels more open, more modern and more "put together", large format tiles are a great choice. Here's what you need to know before you get stuck in.
What counts as a "large format" tile?
There's no single size that defines a large format tile. This collection includes large tiles from around 300 by 600 mm through to much larger wall and floor formats, including:
- 600 by 600 mm square tiles
- 300 by 1200 mm wall planks
- 600 by 1200 mm marble, stone and metal effect tiles
- 900 by 900 mm or 1000 by 1000 mm statement slabs
Do large format tiles make rooms look bigger?
Yes, that's one of their biggest perks. The larger surface area and fewer grout lines create clean, uninterrupted walls and floors, which makes the room feel more open and visually calm. This makes them great for small bathrooms that feel tight, as well as large spaces where you want a luxurious finish.
Where can large format tiles be used?
It depends on the tile. Our range includes wall-only designs as well as tiles suitable for both walls and floors. Check the product's stated use, particularly for a floor, shower or wet room. Possible locations include:
- Bathroom walls and floors
- Kitchen floors
- Hallways and open‑plan living areas
- Feature shower walls
- Wet rooms
- Fireplaces and statement zones
Are large format tiles harder to fit?
They can take more planning and care to handle than smaller tiles. Check that the tiles will fit through doorways and into the room, and that you have enough space and suitable equipment to move and cut them. A wrong cut can waste a large part of a tile, so work out the layout and cuts around edges and fittings before fixing anything. For cutting methods and safety advice, see our guide on how to cut tiles safely. Check that your cutting equipment can accommodate the size and thickness of your chosen tile.
The wall or floor needs to be prepared for the size and weight of the tile. If you've chosen marble or stone effect tiles, lay out several tiles first to see how the light and dark areas work together. Check the coverage per box and allow extra for cuts and wastage. For very large or heavy tiles, ask a tiler with experience of fitting that format.
Do large format tiles crack more easily?
Large format tiles are not inherently fragile once they're fitted correctly, but their size means they need careful handling, cutting and installation. Check the tiles when they arrive and before fitting, and set aside any that are damaged.
The surface beneath these large tiles must be suitable and properly prepared. Poor support or movement beneath a fitted tile can contribute to cracking, while a mistake during cutting may mean losing a whole tile. Plan the cuts before you start and allow extra tiles for wastage.
