What are fireplace tiles?

Fireplace tiles add colour and texture to a hearth, chimney breast or the wall around a fire. For a working fireplace or stove surround, choose tiles suited to the heat they’ll be exposed to and to where they'll be fitted. Finish matters too: soot may show more on lighter or textured surfaces, while glazed tiles are generally easier to wipe clean. Some unglazed tiles and brick effect wall cladding may need sealing, so check the product's care guidance before ordering.

 

Can all tiles be used around a fireplace?

No. A tile listed for a fireplace wall may not be suitable for a hearth or for the area closest to a working fire. Check the product's stated heat suitability and whether it is rated for walls or floors. For a hearth, also check the fireplace or stove manufacturer's requirements for the surface beneath and in front of it. If the fireplace is decorative, you still need to choose a tile suited to the wall or floor where it will be fitted.

 

What tile styles work best around fireplaces?

That depends on the look you’re after:

• Classic Victorian homes. Opt for encaustic-style patterns, checkerboard layouts and deep green or navy glazes.
• Rustic spaces. Choose brick slips, terracotta tones and handmade-style textures.
• Modern minimalism. Try slim glazed tiles stacked vertically for a sharp finish.
• Industrial interiors. Choose charcoal, smoke grey or concrete effect tiles with black stoves or metal accents.
