FAQ's

Picking the right ceramic tile can completely change the feel of a room. Once you know the basics, such as where ceramic tiles work best, how they wear and how to take care of them, it’s much easier to get results that last. Here’s a straightforward guide to help.

Are ceramic tiles better than porcelain tiles?

It depends on what you're after. Porcelain tiles are the tougher option; highly durable, low water absorption and great for bathrooms, kitchens, patios and high traffic floors. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and usually more budget-friendly. It comes in loads of colours and finishes, making it ideal for splashbacks, feature walls and everyday spaces.

Can ceramic tiles be used on floors?

Yes but double check the rating. Not all ceramic tiles are floor-safe, so always look for the PEI or usage rating on the product page. If it says "wall only", keep it off the floor. Even when rated for use on floors though, you should still be cautious with high gloss ceramics in wet areas, as they can get slippery.

How long do ceramic tiles last?

When properly installed and maintained, ceramic tiles can last 20 to 30 years and often even longer. The glazed surface keeps colours fresh and protects against fading, which is why they’re so popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

What’s the difference between matt and gloss ceramic tiles?

Gloss tiles reflect light and give a clean, polished look. This makes them great for brightening up smaller rooms or splashbacks. Just keep them to walls, as they can be slippery underfoot. Matt tiles have a slightly textured finish. They feel softer and are better suited for floors, especially in bathrooms.

Do ceramic tiles need sealing?

The tiles themselves don’t, as the glaze acts as a seal. But the grout does benefit from sealing, especially in areas like showers or kitchen splashbacks. Sealed grout is easier to clean and helps prevent staining.

What should I use to clean ceramic tiles?

Stick to the basics:

  • Warm water and a gentle cleaner are usually all you need.
  • Avoid bleach, ammonia or strong acidic cleaners, as they can wear down grout and glaze.
  • Sweep or vacuum first to remove grit and prevent scratching.

Light, regular cleaning goes a long way. It keeps your ceramic tiles looking their best without the need for heavy scrubbing.
