FAQ's
Choosing a toilet is not just about how it looks. The right option depends on your bathroom layout, available space, budget and the features that matter most to you. These FAQs cover the main things to think about before you buy a toilet.
Which type of toilet is best?
The best toilet for you depends on your space, style and how your bathroom is used. Close coupled toilets, are a popular choice because the pan and cistern come together in one familiar design, making them suitable for many bathrooms.
Back to wall toilets are a good option if you want a neater look, as the cistern is hidden inside a unit or behind a wall. Wall hung toilets keep the floor clear, which can make the room feel more open and cleaning around the pan easier.
Rimless toilets are designed to make cleaning simpler, as there is no hidden rim inside the bowl for grime and limescale to build up around. For a more traditional look, high level and low level toilets can add classic character to a period-style bathroom.
How much should I spend on a toilet?
Toilet prices can vary a lot depending on the type, brand, design and features you choose. As a general guide, basic toilets can start from under £100, while more premium or specialist designs, such as luxury wall hung toilets or smart toilets, can cost up to £6,000.
It is also worth budgeting for installation. Labour can typically range from around £100 to £400, depending on how straightforward the job is and whether extra plumbing or adjustments are needed. Your final cost can depend on the toilet type, existing plumbing, soil pipe position, room size and whether any structural changes are required.
Before you choose, check what is included with the toilet, such as the toilet seat, cistern, flush plate or wall hung frame. This helps you understand the full cost and avoid any surprise extras.
How easy is it to install a new toilet?
How easy a toilet is to install depends on the type of toilet and your existing bathroom setup. Replacing a close coupled toilet with a similar model may be more straightforward, especially if the plumbing points are already in the right place.
Back to wall and wall hung toilets can need more planning, as they often involve concealed cisterns, units or support frames. Wall hung toilets must be fitted to a suitable frame, so it is important to check the wall type, space and installation requirements before buying.
If you are not confident with plumbing, it is best to use a qualified installer. This helps make sure the toilet is fitted securely, connected correctly and working as it should.
