FAQ's
Choosing a toilet is not just about how it looks. The right option depends on your bathroom layout, available space, budget and the features that matter most to you. These FAQs cover the main things to think about before you buy a toilet.

Which type of toilet is best?
That depends on your bathroom and the look you want. The main types differ in how the pan and cistern fit:
- Close coupled toilets have the cistern attached to the pan. They're a familiar choice for many bathrooms.
- Back to wall toilets sit against a wall or toilet unit for a neater finish.
- Floating toilets leave the floor beneath the pan clear, which can make the room feel more open.
You can narrow your choice by features too. A short projection toilet can help in a tight space, a comfort height toilet gives you a higher seat, and a rimless bowl is easier to reach when cleaning. Dual flush toilets let you choose between a smaller and a full flush. Some use around 4 litres for a reduced flush and 6 litres for a full flush, which can help reduce water use.
How much should I budget for a new toilet?
The price depends on the design and features you choose, but the toilet itself may not be the whole cost. Some products include a toilet seat and cistern; others need a separate cistern, flush plate, frame or fittings. The parts you need and any changes to your plumbing will affect the final price, so compare the full setup before you order.
How easy is it to install a new toilet?
How easy a toilet is to install depends on the type of toilet and your existing bathroom setup. Replacing a close coupled toilet with a similar model may be more straightforward, especially if the plumbing points are already in the right place.
The distance from the wall to the centre of the waste pipe helps you check whether the new toilet will suit your existing plumbing. The toilet's projection (how far it extends into the room) is also worth checking, especially in a smaller bathroom or cloakroom.
Back to wall and wall hung toilets can need more planning, as they often involve concealed cisterns, units or support frames. Wall hung toilets must be fitted to a suitable frame, so it is important to check the wall type, space and installation requirements before buying.
If you are not confident with plumbing, it is best to use a qualified installer. This helps make sure the toilet is fitted securely, connected correctly and working as it should. For more guidance, take a look at our guide on how to install a toilet.
Can I replace my current toilet with a different type?
Often, yes, but the fit depends on your existing soil pipe, water supply and available space. A new toilet may have its outlet or inlet in a different position, and back to wall or wall hung designs may need room for a concealed cistern or frame.
