Close Coupled Toilets

Our close coupled toilets cover everything from classic curves to crisp lines. You’ll find traditional pans, contemporary rimless designs and compact options for smaller rooms. A new close coupled toilet is a handy way to match the rest of your bathroom without feeling limited. Enjoy free standard UK delivery on orders over £499 at Victorian Plumbing.

Close coupled toilets are popular because they’re simple to install and kind to your budget. You get reliable performance without overcomplicating the plumbing. Our range includes great value in-house designs alongside trusted brands like Burlington, Duravit, RAK Ceramics and Villeroy & Boch, so you’ve got plenty of solid choices when it comes to browsing and buying.

A close coupled toilet has the cistern sitting directly on the pan, which gives you a tidy, all-in-one look. It’s different from a back to wall toilet where the cistern hides behind furniture, and it’s more compact than a high level design. If you like easy access and straightforward maintenance, it’s a sensible option for most UK homes.

FAQ's

Close coupled toilets are the go-to choice in most UK homes but it’s still worth knowing how they fit, what to expect and the little quirks that catch people out. These FAQs cover the basics, the practical bits and the things you should check when you install one.

What is a close coupled toilet?

A close coupled toilet is the classic all-in-one loo where the cistern sits neatly on top of the pan. No separate flush pipe, no fuss. Everything’s built together, which keeps the footprint tidy and makes fitting straightforward.

You’ll see them in modern and traditional styles, plus back to wall and open back versions. They suit most UK bathrooms because they’re reliable, familiar and easy to live with. We supply these more than any other type.

What are the benefits of close coupled toilets?

  • Easy to install - With the cistern positioned directly on top of the toilet pan, close coupled toilets generally have a simple installation process and don't require a concealed cistern or supporting frame. This can make them a practical option when replacing an existing toilet.

  • Simple to maintain - Unlike toilets with concealed cisterns, the cistern and its internal components are easily accessible. This means tasks such as checking the flush mechanism or replacing components can usually be carried out without accessing a wall or furniture unit.

  • Plenty of styles to choose from - Close coupled toilets are available in a wide variety of traditional and contemporary designs, including different shapes, finishes and compact options. You can also choose features such as rimless, and comfort height, depending on the model.

  • Suitable for a range of bathrooms - From family bathrooms to ensuites and cloakrooms, there's a close coupled toilet to suit many different spaces. Short projection models can be particularly useful when you're working with a smaller space.

  • A practical choice for replacements - If you're replacing an existing toilet, a close coupled model can be a convenient option, particularly when its dimensions and waste connection are compatible with your existing setup. Always check the product specifications and your existing plumbing before choosing a replacement.

Can a close coupled toilet be fitted over existing plumbing?

Usually, yes. As long as your soil pipe lines up with the outlet on the new toilet, it’s a simple swap. Most homes already use standard horizontal or vertical connections, so you’ll often be fine.

If the outlet sits higher or lower than your current setup, a plumber may need to tweak the pipework. It’s a quick job and well worth it to get a proper seal and a snug fit.

Why might a close coupled toilet not sit fully against the wall?

A few things can leave a small gap. Open back toilets are designed that way so you can reach the pipework behind. In older homes it can often be due to skirting boards, awkward soil pipe angles or a water inlet that sits in the wrong spot.

A back to wall close coupled toilet usually solves this. Alternatively, your plumber can shift the inlet or trim the skirting so the pan tucks in neatly.

How do you install a close coupled toilet?

Installing a close coupled toilet involves positioning and securing the toilet pan, attaching the cistern, and connecting the plumbing to ensure a watertight, leak-free setup. Once installed, it’s important to test everything to make sure it’s working correctly.

For a step-by-step guide, watch our video below:

This video walks you through the full process, including preparing your space, securing the pan and cistern, connecting the pipework, and testing the installation.

Is it possible to retrofit a close coupled toilet?

Yes, you can retrofit one in most cases. They bolt to the floor and connect to standard UK plumbing. That’s why they’re a popular choice for quick bathroom refreshes and DIY upgrades.

Success depends on your current soil pipe direction and alignment. If the pan outlet doesn’t match what you’ve already got, you might need a small pipe adjustment. Once that’s sorted, the rest is easy.

Are flush and inlet valves standardised?

They’re often similar but not fully standard. Many modern close coupled toilets use widely available valves that follow common UK sizes, especially if they’re WRAS approved.

Some brands use their own fittings, though. If you ever need a replacement, it’s best to check the product spec or ask a plumber. A like-for-like part keeps everything working smoothly.
