FAQ's
Short projection toilets are a clever way to make small bathrooms feel bigger but there’s a bit to know before you choose one. This FAQ covers the sizes, clearances, comfort levels and fitting tips you’ll want to look at first before buying and installing a new cloakroom toilet.
What is a short projection toilet?
A short projection toilet is a compact loo that doesn’t stick out as far into the room. Most are around 500 to 550 mm deep, which frees up valuable floor space. They’re ideal for cloakrooms and tight bathrooms where every centimetre counts.
You’ll find them in back to wall and close coupled styles, and plenty can be paired with a concealed cistern if you want a cleaner look. We supply a lot of these for fitting in older UK homes where layouts can be a bit quirky.
How much space do you need for a cloakroom toilet?
Cloakrooms are famously small, so clearances matter. Here’s a handy guide for a comfortable fit:
- Around 600 mm of space in front of the toilet.
- Around 200 mm of room on each side.
- A typical workable layout is roughly 80 to 90 cm wide and 140 to 150 cm long.
Are short projection toilets as comfortable as standard toilets?
Yes. Even though they’re smaller, you still get the features you expect from a full size toilet. The flush is the same, the plumbing’s the same and the seat usually feels familiar.
Very compact pans can feel a touch narrower to sit on but most customers tell us they hardly notice once it’s installed. If you’re tight on space, they’re a smart way to keep comfort without sacrificing room.
Do short projection toilets come in back to wall or concealed cistern options?
They do, and there’s plenty of choice. Here’s what you’ll find:
- Back to wall toilets for a tidy finish.
- Close coupled short projection toilets if you prefer a simpler fit.
- Wall hung toilets for the biggest space saving effect.
- Models that pair neatly with a concealed cistern or furniture unit.
If you’re trying to streamline the whole room, these options help you keep things looking clean and modern.
Are there any installation or plumbing limitations with cloakroom toilets?
Cloakroom toilets are usually straightforward to fit, but it’s worth knowing a few things before you choose one:
- The soil pipe position needs to suit the toilet type. In very small rooms this can limit where the toilet can sit.
- Back to wall models may need extra room behind them for a concealed cistern or unit.
- Wall hung cloakroom toilets need a suitable frame and strong studwork.
- Compact or side access cisterns are useful when the space is so tight you can’t reach standard fittings easily.
Most cloakroom toilets work with standard UK plumbing, so you won’t usually need major changes. But a quick check of your layout saves a lot of hassle later.
