Comfort Height Toilets

Choosing the right toilet height can make everyday use feel more comfortable. Comfort height toilets sit higher than standard toilets, which can make sitting down and standing up easier for some users. These FAQs cover the key things to know before you choose one.

What is a comfort height toilet?

A comfort height toilet has a taller pan than a standard model, which can make sitting down and standing up easier. As a guide, standard pans are around 38 to 40cm from the floor to the rim, while comfort height pans are around 45 to 48cm; roughly 5 to 10cm higher. With the seat fitted, the height is similar to an ordinary dining chair.

The extra height can mean less bending when sitting down or standing up, helping to ease strain on your knees and back.

Who are they suitable for?

Comfort height toilets can be a helpful choice for taller adults, older users and people with reduced mobility. They may also suit anyone who finds a standard toilet too low or uncomfortable to use. For wheelchair users, the higher seat position can make transfers easier in some layouts, but it is important to check the toilet height, surrounding space and any accessibility requirements before buying.

Are comfort height toilets suitable for children?

Comfort height toilets can feel a little too tall for younger children. If their feet do not reach the floor, a small step stool can help them feel more stable and supported. This can make the toilet easier and safer for them to use day to day.

Can comfort height toilets affect posture or comfort?

Most people choose comfort height toilets because the higher sitting position feels easier and more comfortable. However, the right height depends on the user. If the toilet feels too high or your feet do not sit flat on the floor, a footstool can help create a more supported sitting position.

Do comfort height toilets meet UK accessibility regulations?

Comfort height toilets can be useful in accessible bathroom designs, including spaces designed with Document M in mind. However, the toilet alone does not make a bathroom compliant. You will also need to consider the correct height, grab rails, transfer space, clearances and overall layout. For public, commercial or accessibility-focused bathrooms, always check the latest guidance and speak to a qualified installer.

Can you fit a comfort height toilet in an existing bathroom?

In many homes, a comfort height toilet can replace a standard toilet, but it depends on the model and your existing plumbing. Close coupled and back to wall toilets may be more straightforward to fit, while wall hung toilets usually need a suitable support frame. Before choosing, check the soil pipe position, available space and any frame or fixing requirements.
