FAQ's
Short projection toilets are a clever way to make small bathrooms feel bigger but there's a bit to know before you choose one. This FAQ covers the sizes, clearances, comfort levels and fitting tips you'll want to look at first before buying and installing a new cloakroom toilet.
What is a short projection toilet?
A short projection toilet is a compact loo that doesn't stick out as far into the room. Most are around 490mm to 600mm deep, which frees up valuable floor space. They're ideal for cloakrooms and tight bathrooms where every centimetre counts.
You'll find them in back to wall and close coupled styles, and plenty can be paired with a concealed cistern if you want a cleaner look. Many have practical features such as dual flush systems to help reduce water use and rimless bowls that are easier to clean. We supply a lot of these for fitting in older UK homes where layouts can be a bit quirky.
How much space do you need for a cloakroom toilet?
Cloakrooms are famously small, so clearances matter. Here's a handy guide for a comfortable fit:
- Around 600 mm of space in front of the toilet.
- Around 200 mm of room on each side.
- A typical workable layout is roughly 80 to 90 cm wide and 140 to 150 cm long.
Are short projection toilets as comfortable as standard toilets?
Yes. Even though they're smaller, you still get the features you expect from a full size toilet. The flush is the same, the plumbing's the same and the seat usually feels familiar.
Very compact pans can feel a touch narrower to sit on but most customers tell us they hardly notice once it's installed. If you're tight on space, they're a smart way to keep comfort without sacrificing room.
Do cloakroom toilets flush well?
Yes, many do. A compact toilet can have a strong flush, though how well it rinses the whole bowl varies by model. Some cisterns are quieter than others when they refill too, which can matter in a cloakroom close to living spaces.
Are there any fitting limitations with cloakroom toilets?
Yes, the existing soil pipe and water supply can affect which design will fit. A back-to-wall toilet needs room for its concealed cistern or unit, while a wall hung toilet needs a suitable support frame. In a tight cloakroom, those parts can affect the finished position of the pan, so the product drawings matter as much as the toilet's headline depth.
