Column Radiators

Column radiators are built from rows of upright sections, giving them the familiar shape associated with traditional heating. Most of our range has two, three or four columns arranged from front to back, with both horizontal and vertical designs available.

The number of columns affects how deep the radiator is and how much heating surface it has. Two column models tend to have a slimmer profile, while three and four column designs project further from the wall and can provide more heat at comparable heights and widths.

Our range of column radiators runs from compact horizontal options to tall vertical designs, with outputs from below 1000 BTU to well over 5000 BTU. Work out how much heat the room needs first, then compare the height, width and depth that fit your available space.

Keswick 600 x 1010mm Cast Iron Style Traditional 3 Column Antique Mottled Copper Radiator

Beautiful radiator

25th August 2026

It’s hard to work out the exact colour of this radiator from the pictures but I was so happy when it came. It looks great and finished perfectly with the antique brass fittings.

FAQ's

Column radiators come in different materials, shapes and setups, so there are a few things worth knowing before you choose. These FAQs explain how they heat, how they differ from cast iron, where vertical and horizontal designs work best, and what to check when fitting or replacing one.

Are column radiators the same as cast iron radiators?

No. Column describes the radiator's shape and construction, while cast iron describes the material it's made from. Many modern column radiators are made from steel but use a traditional, cast iron-style design. Genuine cast iron radiators are a separate option and tend to be heavier, with different heat up and cool down characteristics.

Are column radiators efficient?

Column radiators can heat a room effectively when their BTU output matches what the space needs. The extra surface created by the columns can help them give out plenty of heat, but having more columns doesn't automatically make a radiator cheaper to run. How much energy you use depends on how powerful the radiator is, how quickly the room loses heat and how you control the heating.

Do column radiators take longer to heat up?

Not necessarily. How quickly a radiator warms up depends on what it's made from, its size, how much water it holds and the temperature of the heating system. For example, a column radiator that looks like a traditional cast iron model may actually be made from steel and behave quite differently.

Should I choose a vertical or horizontal column radiator?

Choose around the wall space you have rather than assuming one orientation will heat better. Horizontal column radiators work well across wider stretches of wall or beneath windows, while vertical models make better use of narrower spaces.

Can column radiators go on stud walls?

They can, but the wall needs to be able to support the radiator safely. Column radiators can be heavier than standard panel designs, particularly larger three and four column models, so the fixings need to suit both the radiator's weight and the wall construction. Some models can also use floor feet for additional support. If you're unsure, have the wall and fixing method checked by an installer before fitting.

Can I replace a panel radiator with a column radiator?

Usually, yes, but don't choose the replacement by dimensions alone. Make sure the column radiator gives the room enough heat and check its depth, weight and connection positions against your existing setup. The pipework or wall fixings may need changing if the new radiator is a different size or shape, so factor that into the installation before you buy.
