Not sure where to start? These quick answers will help you pick the right central heating radiator.
What are central heating radiators?
Central heating radiators (often called convector radiators) connect directly to your boiler. Hot water circulates through the radiator panels and fins, warming the surrounding air. They provide steady, reliable heat and are the most common heating choice in UK homes.
What's the difference between Type 11, Type 21 and Type 22 radiators?
The type refers to the number of panels and internal fins:
- Type 11 (K1): Single panel, single row of fins. These are slimmer, and so are ideal for smaller rooms.
- Type 21 (P+): Double panel, single row of fins. They provide higher output without much extra depth.
- Type 22 (K2): Double panel, double row of fins. These produce more heat, making them suitable for larger or cooler rooms.
Are convector radiators efficient?
Yes, when matched to the room. The finned design delivers strong, even heat at typical flow temperatures. Fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) to control each room and reduce waste.
Aluminium radiators are often considered particularly efficient, as they heat up and cool down quickly and can use up to 15% less energy compared to some steel models. This is because they require less water to heat, helping to reduce running costs. Double panel convector radiators also offer increased surface area for higher heat output where needed.
Electric radiators provide another efficient option for certain spaces, offering precise room-by-room control and no heat loss through pipework.
Will these work with low temperature systems or heat pumps?
Yes. Opt for a higher output type/size to maintain comfort at lower flow temperatures.
How long do central heating radiators last?
Most standard mild steel radiators last around 10 to 15 years, depending on water quality and system maintenance. Higher-grade stainless steel models may last longer due to greater corrosion resistance. If your radiators take longer to heat up or develop cold spots, replacement may improve comfort and efficiency.
How do I maintain performance?
Bleeding radiators removes trapped air and helps ensure even heat output. Check your system once or twice a year, especially before winter.
