Here at Victorian Plumbing we have been keeping a close eye on the latest bathroom trends in the first half of 2016. In today's article we would like to share our thoughts on the latest bathroom trends and offer a few clever ideas that you might be able to steal for your own bathroom design.

Read on to learn more about the 8 biggest bathroom trends of 2016 so far...

1. Metro tiles

The use of metro tiles in the bathroom has exploded in 2016. These universal 20 cm by 10 cm tiles are everywhere right now and it's easy to see why. Perfect for either the bathroom or kitchen; subway style metro tiles can enhance any space in your home while also providing an easy to maintain surface. Why not try using metro tiles to highlight a specific area of your bathroom like the area around a shower enclosure or use them on the wall between bath and ceiling?

2. Scandinavian bathrooms

The Scandinavian design movement has been growing in popularity since it was internationally recognised in the 1950's. It didn't take long for this minimalist design style to begin making its way into the bathroom and this year we've seen the Scandinavian style adopted by more and more of Victorian Plumbing's customers. Features of a Scandinavian designed bathroom include neutral colours, beautiful hard floors and wall hung bathroom fixtures.

The great thing about adopting the Scandinavian bathroom style is that you can either adopt many features of the style or hand-pick just a few. Wall hung vanity units are a good option to consider if you’re planning a Scandinavian bathroom, above I have singled out our white wall hung vanity unit from the hugely popular Nova bathroom furniture range. For lots more talk about this style and the features that define it, be sure to take a look at our guide to Scandinavian bathrooms.

3. Woods

A trend that we spotted right at the start of the year was our customers using more natural products like wood in their bathroom designs. The idea here is to invite more natural products into your bathroom and wood is one of the most versatile materials you can choose. Wooden duckboards have seen a 2016 surge in demand because of this growing trend as well as other bathroom accessories like wooden mirrors.

One of the best products we stock that can help you add more wood to your bathroom is the Brooklyn range of bathroom furniture. The beautiful Brooklyn range includes vanity units, bathroom storage solutions and mirrored cabinets. The range is available in three colours: avola grey, avola brown and hacienda black. For full coverage of using woods in the bathroom please click the link to take a look at our comprehensive guide.

4. Combination toilet & basins

Combination toilet & basin units combine both a toilet and wash basin in one single, compact unit. This new innovation in bathroom design is a superb space saving solution for under stairs toilets and cloakroom bathrooms.

Sales of combination toilet & basins units have soared in 2016 and we have increased our range to accommodate this growing demand. Two great options, if you're considering a combination unit, are the Metro and Kyoto combination two-in-one toilet & basins. Save money as well as space with these two great value options..

5. Double basins & double showers

Two is better than one in 2016 it seems. This year has seen UK bathrooms embrace the idea of having both double showers and double basins. Double basins have become popular because more people are designing bathrooms that can cope with two or more people using them at the same time. Double basins allow two people to get washed and ready for the day at the same time; perfect when time is short before work and school.

A double shower means you have both the standard overhead shower head and also a smaller body shower head attached to the same shower.

6. Grey bathrooms

Big in 2015 but bigger in 2016, grey bathrooms are still the easiest and most effective way of designing a stylish, future proof bathroom. The 'must have' colour for bathrooms: grey bathrooms are cool, understated and go with either a modern or traditionally designed bathroom.

The key to achieving the grey bathroom look is to make smart choices when it comes to walls and floors. Grey metro tiles are a nice option for your bathroom walls and either grey wood or wood effect floor tiles are a fantastic option for your bathroom floor. Take advantage of our grey bathrooms guide to get plenty of ideas and inspiration for your perfect grey bathroom!

7. Freestanding baths

From the time when everybody wanted a shower in their home, to today when people are falling back in love with a long soak in the bath; freestanding baths have become the must have edition in everyone's new bathroom. Freestanding baths require a little more space than a normal bath so they're not for every bathroom design but if space permits: definitely consider one.

A few styles to consider are traditional or modern styled freestanding baths, the slipper style or maybe go for the double ended option. Freestanding baths are also available in natural stone or cast iron. Above I have picked out a nice option which I believe would create a gorgeous feature in any bathroom design.

8. Round mirrors

The humble bathroom mirror can either be friend or foe as you glance at your fully dressed reflection in the morning. How that reflection is framed is important and a trend this year is to have a round bathroom mirror instead of the more traditional square and rectangular options.
