A semi recessed basin fits partly within a compatible vanity unit or worktop and projects beyond its front edge. This can provide a useful bowl without requiring especially deep furniture, but the basin, cut-outs and unit all need to work together. These FAQs explain how to measure up, replace an existing basin and check what you'll need before fitting.

 

How do I measure for a semi recessed basin?

Firstly, check the basin's overall width and depth, its total projection from the wall and how far the bowl will extend beyond the front of the unit. You will also need to confirm that there is enough space inside the furniture for the bowl and plumbing without obstructing doors, drawers or internal supports.

Do not calculate the required opening from the semi recessed basin's overall dimensions. Instead, use the manufacturer’s measurements or cutting template to check the size and shape of the worktop and front panel cut-outs.

If you are replacing an existing basin, measure the current openings as well. The new basin must fit them or allow them to be altered safely, and its rim or flange must cover the cut edges completely.

 

Can I replace a cracked basin without replacing the whole vanity?

You may be able to keep the existing furniture if it remains strong and has no swelling, water damage or weakness around the cut-outs. The replacement basin must suit the unit's depth, fit or safely accommodate the existing openings and leave enough space inside for the bowl and plumbing. It must also cover the exposed edges and use a support and fixing method that works with the furniture.

Don't assume that a semi recessed basin will fit because it has the same overall shape and dimensions. Two different semi recessed rectangular bathroom sinks, for example, may still require different openings and fixing arrangements.

 

Are semi recessed sinks good for small bathrooms?

Semi recessed wash basins are a great option when you want a decent-sized basin but don't have room for deep bathroom furniture. As the bowl sticks out slightly beyond the vanity, you can still get plenty of space to wash your hands without the unit taking up too much room. A short projection semi recessed basin can be especially handy in en-suites, cloakrooms and smaller bathrooms where every bit of space counts.

 

Does a semi recessed basin need a special vanity unit?

The unit must be designed or confirmed as suitable for a semi recessed basin. Both the worktop and front panel may need shaped cut-outs, and the furniture must provide enough support for the basin.

Before installing one, check that the unit has enough internal clearance for the bowl and plumbing and that drawers, doors or structural parts will not get in the way. Any exposed cut edges must also be sealed against moisture.

For the simplest fit, choose a basin and furniture combination that the manufacturer lists as compatible. If you plan to adapt another unit, ask an experienced installer to confirm that it can be cut and supported safely.
