Horizontal Radiators

Our horizontal radiators fit across wider sections of wall, whether that’s beneath a window or along an open stretch of the room. The range runs from compact models to radiators over 1600mm wide, with plenty of heat outputs to choose from. Measure the space you have, then check how many BTUs the room needs before deciding what fits.

Horizontal doesn’t just mean the familiar white panel radiator. Choose from compact convectors, modern designer horizontal radiators and traditional horizontal column radiators, with single, double and multi-column designs available. Aside from white, anthracite, black, raw metal and selected coloured or metallic finishes give you plenty of other ways to go.

Two horizontal radiators can take up similar wall space and still give out very different amounts of heat. Height, panels, columns and the way the radiator is designed all play a part, so don’t choose on width alone. Work out what the room needs first, then find a horizontal radiator with the dimensions and BTU output to match.

FAQ's

Horizontal radiators come in far more shapes and sizes than the standard panel radiator you might already have at home. The right one depends on where it needs to fit, how much heat the room needs and the type of radiator you prefer.

What are the benefits of horizontal radiators?

  • Makes good use of wall space: Ideal for wider walls and areas beneath windows.
  • Wide range of styles: Available in modern, traditional, designer and column designs.
  • Good heat output: Available in different sizes and BTU outputs to suit a variety of rooms.
  • Easy to style: The horizontal shape works well with a wide range of interior designs.
  • Suitable for different rooms: A practical option for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and more.

Are horizontal radiators as good as vertical radiators?

Yes. A horizontal radiator can heat a room just as well, and efficiently, as a vertical radiator if its BTU output matches what the space needs. The main difference is how each shape uses the wall: horizontal radiators suit wider stretches of wall, while vertical radiators make better use of narrower spaces. Your best option is to compare the output of the individual radiators rather than assuming one orientation will heat better.

What size horizontal radiator do I need?

The right size depends on how much heat the room needs as well as the wall space you have available. Work out the required BTU first, taking the room size, windows, external walls and how well it holds heat into account. Then choose a horizontal radiator that meets that output and fits the space. Our guide on how to calculate BTU can help you work it out.

What styles of horizontal radiators are available?

Horizontal radiators are available in a range of styles, finishes and sizes to suit different interiors and heating needs. Options include modern panel radiators, designer styles and horizontal column radiators. Before you choose, consider your available wall space, preferred style and required BTU output.

Can I put a horizontal radiator under a window?

Yes. Horizontal radiators are commonly fitted beneath windows because the space is often difficult to use for furniture. Make sure there's enough room for the radiator and the clearances recommended by the manufacturer, and avoid covering it with long curtains or placing large furniture directly in front of it, as this can restrict how well heat moves into the room.

Can I replace a vertical radiator with a horizontal one?

Usually, yes, but the new radiator may need different pipe positions and wall fixings. The important thing is to make sure the replacement gives the room enough heat rather than simply matching the old radiator's dimensions. If the pipework needs moving or you’re unsure about the fit, it's best to have the change checked by a plumbing or heating professional.

Do I need new radiator valves?

Not always. You may be able to reuse your existing valves if they're in good condition and suit the connections on your new horizontal radiator. The type you need also depends on where the pipes come from and how the radiator connects to them. If replacements are needed, our radiator valves include angled, straight, corner and thermostatic options in a range of finishes.
