Two way Stylish light switch cover
27th February 2026These antique brass style light switch covers look so much better than the cheap white ones, adding a bit of class. They are slightly more complicated to wire up because of the two way switch, but if you take a photo of the old one before disconnecting, definitely do-able.

FAQ's
Light switches might be small, but they do a lot of work every day. Plus, there’s more choice out there than you might expect. Whether you're upgrading your lighting, refreshing your space or troubleshooting a tired old switch, these quick FAQs will help you understand the terminology, pick the right style and know when it’s time for a replacement.
What does "gang" mean?
"Gang" simply refers to how many switches are on one faceplate. So a 1 gang switch has one switch, a 2 gang light switch has two, a 3 gang switch has three, and so on. Each switch controls its own lighting circuit, which is why you’ll often see larger gang switches in rooms with layered or multiple light sources.
If you need to control the same light from two different places (like the top and bottom of stairs), that’s when you look for 2 way switches; this is different from gang.
What different switch types are available?
There are three main types of light switches you’ll come across: rocker, toggle and dimmer. Each one controls your lighting a little differently, so the right choice depends on how you want your space to feel and function.
Rocker light switches give you a familiar on/off press with a smooth, flat switch, ideal for everyday use. Toggle switches have that classic flick-up, flick-down action and add a bit of character, making them great if you’re after a more traditional look in your home. And if you want to change the mood of a room, dimmer light switches let you adjust brightness instead of just turning lights on or off.
Do you need an electrician to replace a light switch?
You can replace a light switch yourself if you’re confident with DIY and know how to work safely, but for most people, getting a qualified electrician is a better choice. Light switches may look simple but you’re still dealing with live wiring and local electrical regulations. If the power isn’t isolated correctly, or the connections aren’t made properly, you could risk shocks, damage or faults later on.
What is the life expectancy of a light switch?
A good quality light switch can last 10 to 30 years, sometimes even longer if it’s well-made, installed correctly and used gently. But like anything mechanical, switches do wear out over time. The internal contacts can loosen, plastic can become brittle and dimmer switches, with more components inside, usually show their age sooner than simple rocker or toggle switches.
If your switch starts feeling loose, making crackling or buzzing sounds, or doesn’t always connect cleanly when you use it, that’s a sign it might be time for a replacement.
