Bathroom Storage Ideas

Whether you have a large or small bathroom, choosing the right bathroom storage solution is really important. Bottles on the window sill or towels on the floor is not a great look; what you want is everything in your bathroom to have its own place.

It's also important to make sure the things you need in the bathroom are close to hand. It isn't ideal if your shampoo is stored miles away from the shower or you can't reach your towel while standing in the bath.

In this expert guide from Victorian Plumbing we're going to have a look at the various bathroom storage options that are available. We will take a look at storage ideas for both large and small bathrooms as well as some budget friendly solutions.

1. Vanity Units

Virtually unseen in UK bathrooms 5 or 6 years ago; today vanity units are one of the most popular bathroom storage ideas. Combining both an integrated basin and handy underneath cupboard space; vanity units are perfect for any size bathroom.

Larger family-sized bathrooms would benefit from a freestanding vanity unit or another option to consider is a combination vanity unit that includes a toilet as well as the basin and cupboard space. Here at Victorian Plumbing we also have a good selection of vanity unit bathroom suites that could potentially save you money compared to buying the vanity unit separately from the rest of your bathroom suite.

A nice idea for smaller cloakroom bathrooms or en-suites is a short projection vanity unit. These vanities stick out less from your bathroom wall meaning they save a good bit of space. The Milan unit (pictured above) also has an integrated toilet roll holder and brush for extra convenience, available in both left and right hand options.

2. Mirrored Cabinets

We all need a bathroom mirror, we always need more storage space, so why not opt for a mirrored cabinet over a conventional mirror.

Mirrored cabinets are such a great idea because they can store the things you'll need to use while looking at your reflection first thing in the morning. Grooming products, moisturisers and your favourite aftershave or perfume are all kept handy when you store them in a mirrored cabinet.

One other important factor to consider is that mirrored cabinets are a great place to keep medicines and prescriptions drugs. This is especially true if you have young children or pets in the house because anything stored in your cabinet is out of reach and out of sight.

3. Wall Hung Cabinets

Wall hung storage is a really clever space saving idea. Keeping your cabinets off the floor means there's more space in your bathroom for other essential fixtures like shower enclosures and baths.

An option that's ideal for a larger bathroom is a tallboy wall hung cabinet. These tall units will look really stylish and they are more reasonably priced than you might have thought. If you're designing a smaller bathroom then take a look at our selection smaller wall hung cabinets.

4. Baskets & Caddies

Baskets and caddies are the great organisers of the bathroom. If you're sharing the bathroom with your nearest and dearest then the last thing you want to do is mix up your personal toiletries.

Baskets and caddies can work perfectly as stand alone storage places but they can also be used to separate the drawers and shelves of your cabinet or vanity unit.

A nice idea is to use, say, 2 shower caddies to organise 'his' and 'hers' shower products. Store the caddies on a shelf of your vanity unit and then when it's shower time simple take the caddy out and place it next to the shower for easy access. Pop the caddy back in your vanity unit when you're all done. This will save you carting multiple bottles to the shower everytime you want a refreshing shower!

5. Shelving

Well placed bathroom shelving is a superb way of making the most of your bathroom wall space. Think about putting bathroom shelves in places where nothing else would be suitable. For example, shelving on the wall behind your toilet or above the door to your bathroom will leave other wall place available for a wall hung cabinet or mirrored cabinet.

6. Towel Rails

A no brainer in modern bathroom design; a heated towel rail gives you a convenient place in your bathroom to hang and store your towels. A ladder heated towel rail would be perfect for a modern-styled bathroom whereas a floor mounted traditional heated radiator would be a beautiful feature in a more vintage-styled bathroom.

Remember to try and plan to have your heated towel rail positioned as close as you can to your shower or bath. There is nothing more satisfying on a cold winter's morning than having a toasty warm towel to hand without leaving the warmth of your bath or shower.

7. Ladder Shelves

Ladder shelves are new trend in bathroom design. The idea is that you place a decorative ladder in your bathroom and then use the steps of the ladder to display and store your favourite cosmetics and bathroom collectibles.

Perhaps only really suitable for larger bathrooms; ladder shelves can be a stunning feature. Either match the colour and material of the ladder to your bathroom furniture or choose a contrasting colour to give your bathroom design a little extra depth.
