FAQ's

Keeping your bathroom looking fresh and feeling hygienic is easier than you think; starting with your shower curtain. From choosing the right height and colour to preventing mould, a little know how goes a long way. Find out how to hang them, how they can make your bathroom feel bigger and the best ways to clean them.

Should a shower curtain touch the floor?

A shower curtain should never sit on the floor. When it does, it traps moisture and dirt, creating the perfect conditions for mould and mildew to grow.

Instead, hang it about 2 to 5 inches above the floor to keep your bathroom clean and hygienic. This gap allows air to circulate, helping the curtain dry properly after every shower and preventing water from pooling at the bottom. This keeps both curtain and floor fresher for longer. It also stops dust, hair and bathroom debris from collecting along the hem.

Can a shower curtain make a bathroom look bigger?

The right shower curtain can transform a cramped bathroom into a space that feels open and airy. Hang your curtain higher, closer to the ceiling, to draw the eye upward and give the illusion of extra height. Light or neutral colours, such as cream, soft grey or white shower curtains, help reflect light and make the room feel more spacious, while striped shower curtains can create a sense of elongation that stretches your walls.

Fabric choice also plays a part. Lightweight curtains in cotton, linen or even open-weave polyester add texture and depth without weighing the room down, while vinyl options keep things practical and moisture-free.

How do you clean shower curtains?

Over time, shower curtains can collect mould, mildew, soap scum and bacteria. Regular cleaning keeps them looking sharp and your bathroom feeling healthy.

For a deep clean, remove the curtain and rings. Machine-wash PVC shower curtains on a warm, gentle cycle with detergent, a splash of baking soda and a bit of distilled vinegar; toss in a couple of towels to prevent crumpling. Fabric curtains benefit from a careful hand scrub with baking soda, targeting stains and mildew, then a thorough warm rinse. Soak rings in hot water and vinegar to remove limescale and soap scum. Finally, keep your curtain fresh by ventilating the bathroom, wiping down the bottom weekly and giving it a full clean at least once a month.
