Belfast Sinks & Butler Sinks
Belfast Sinks & Butler Sinks
Shop our range of Butler and Belfast kitchen sinks. But what are the differences between them? Simply put, Belfast sinks are typically deeper and feature overflows, whereas Butler kitchen sinks are more shallow and don't have an overflow. Free standard UK delivery on orders over £499 at Victorian Plumbing. Browse our full range of kitchen sinks.
Where do Belfast sinks originate from? Yes, you guessed it, Belfast! They are the most popular of the two sink types we have for sale, mainly because of their depth and overflow. Undermount Belfast sinks come in single bowl and double bowl designs and are made with extra strong ceramic for durability.
Butler sinks originated from London at a time when water was being conserved. Because of this, they don't feature an overflow. Being more on the shallow side, they also require less water to fill. Butler sinks are popular in traditional UK homes and there are double bowl options for those who require more space. Like Belfast kitchen sinks, Butler sinks come in a range of different materials, from ceramic to copper and stainless steel.

FAQ's
Looking to enhance your kitchen with a touch of traditional elegance? Then a Butler or Belfast sink might be the ideal choice. Both sinks share similar aesthetics, yet their practicality and installation varies. Explore these frequently asked questions to understand which sink type best suits your kitchen.
What is the difference between a Belfast and a Butler sink?
Belfast and Butler sinks both look very similar but differ in terms of size and drainage placement. Belfast sinks, smaller and deeper, fit a 600mm unit and have the drain closer to the tap. In contrast, Butler sinks are wider, fitting an 800mm unit, with a slightly more shallow bowl and the drain situated in the middle.
Historically, Butler sinks lacked an overflow while Belfast sinks featured a Weir overflow. Over time, Butler sinks widened, retaining a shallow structure, while Belfast sinks remained deeper with a Weir overflow.
How practical are Belfast and Butler sinks?
A Belfast sink is a classic choice for kitchen sinks. A perfect mixture of style and practicality, Belfast sinks are ideal for large kitchens with a specific aesthetic in mind.
Butler sinks are typically made from fireclay. This is a less porous material than other sinks making it a hygienic choice for the kitchen.
Another advantage is their size. Butler sinks boast exceptional depth, catering well to larger households. Meanwhile, Belfast sinks, with their generous bowl and depth, accommodate an abundance of kitchenware, perfect for households with extensive washing up needs. If you have a narrow kitchen counter, Butler sinks can be fitted with an overhang which creates a unique and stylish look.
Should my Belfast sink go above or below the worktop?
Belfast sinks are fitted into your kitchen unit with the top of the basin sitting just below the work top. They are installed similarly to an undermount sink. However, in the case of Belfast and Butler sinks, the front wall of the sink is visible and can even feature an overhang.
