Round white plastic " hair" trap?

With a shower waste do you have to select a specific one depending on your shower tray, or is it just a matter of taste which one I prefer one with a longer thread or the shorter thread. Sorry if my question sounds as if I'm stupid but I no nothing about plumbing. Regards Peter
