What is LVT flooring?

LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is a multi-layered floor made up of a stable base, a moisture-resistant core, a high definition design layer (often wood, marble or stone effect) and a tough wear layer on top. Many click LVT options come with built-in underlay for added comfort and sound control. The result is realistic looks, great durability and easy upkeep.

 

What’s the difference between LVT and SPC?

SPC (stone-polymer core) is a more rigid version of LVT; extra dent-resistant and stable, ideal for rooms with temperature swings like conservatories. Traditional vinyl flooring is a bit softer and warmer underfoot, great for most areas of the home. Both LVT and SPC flooring are waterproof.

 

Is vinyl flooring better than laminate?

In splash-prone areas, yes. LVT is fully waterproof, making it a smart choice for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. Laminate flooring can swell if water gets in. Laminate sometimes wins on price but LVT takes the lead on water resistance, sound dampening and general durability.

 

Can I put LVT in bathrooms?

Yes, as LVT is waterproof. Just make sure to seal around the edges and any fixtures with silicone or trims to stop water from getting underneath.

 

Is LVT slippery?

No, as most options have a textured or embossed surface to add grip. For bathrooms, go with a matt or lightly textured finish instead of gloss.

 

Is vinyl flooring hard wearing?

Very much so. The wear layer protects against everyday knocks and scrapes. Here’s a rough guide:

• 0.3 mm wear layer: Fine for bedrooms and living rooms.
• 0.4 to 0.55 mm wear layer: Ideal for kitchens, hallways and busier spaces.

For day-to-day care, a sweep and the odd damp mop will keep it looking good.

 

Can I use underfloor heating with a vinyl floor?

Yes. Most vinyl flooring is compatible with underfloor heating. Just keep the surface temperature below 27°C, use a low-tog underlay and bring the heat up (and down) gradually.

 

Do you need underlay for click LVT?

Often not; many click LVT products already have underlay attached. If yours doesn’t, go for an LVT-specific underlay (look for low tog if you’ve got underfloor heating and make sure it includes a vapour barrier if installing over concrete). Always fit it over a flat, clean and dry subfloor.

 

How do you install click LVT?

Let the packs sit in the room for 48 hours to adjust. Make sure the subfloor is flat and dry. Boards click together as a floating floor. This means that you need to leave around 8mm for expansion around edges and stagger the joins for strength and a natural look. Add trims or skirting last, and don’t fix these through the floor. You can walk on it straight after fitting.

 

Do I need glue?

Not with click-fit products, as they’re designed to float. If you prefer a glued-down installation (often used in commercial settings), go for a glue-down vinyl floor and use the right adhesive.

 

How do I cut LVT?

Score the surface with a sharp knife and snap it cleanly. For detailed shapes or notches, use a fine tooth saw or multi-tool. Measure twice; LVT click flooring is forgiving but clean cuts and proper finishing make all the difference.
