Soap Dishes

Soap dishes might be small but they make a big difference in keeping your bathroom neat and tidy. Keep reading to find out what they're made of, why drainage matters and how to fit them in your shower.

What is a soap dish?

A soap dish is a clever little bathroom accessory that gives your bar of soap a proper home. By keeping soap off basins, shower ledges or vanity unit countertops, it allows each bar to dry between uses, helping it last longer and stay in good condition.

What are soap dishes made from?

Bathroom soap dishes come in a range of materials. Plastic is a lightweight, budget-friendly option, while porcelain and ceramic soap dishes are durable and can double as decorative touches. Glass soap dishes, including frosted varieties, add an elegant feel to any space. For a modern look, metal soap dishes in finishes like stainless steel or chrome are both tough and stylish.

Will water drain away from the soap dish?

It depends on the design. Water can run through an open basket or a dish with drainage holes, although some may still collect around the soap. A solid dish catches the drips instead, so you'll need to empty and clean it to stop the soap sitting in water.

How do you attach a soap dish to a shower?

For wall mounted soap dishes, start by choosing a spot within easy reach but out of the direct water spray. Apply strong bathroom adhesive to the wall and dish, press it in place, check it is level and fill the edges with grout. Make sure it has drainage to keep your soap dry. Many soap dishes, however, are freestanding and simply sit on your basin, vanity unit or bath.
