Bathroom sealant does a lot of heavy lifting, from keeping water out of joints to helping protect against mould and damp. To help you get the best result, we've answered some of the most common questions about waterproofing, repairs, application and how long a good seal should last.

 

Is silicone sealant completely waterproof?

Yes, once fully cured, 100% silicone sealant is waterproof and won't absorb or break down under normal bathroom moisture. Give it around 24 to 48 hours to cure properly before exposing it to water, and always check the label says "100% silicone" rather than an acrylic blend.

 

Will bathroom sealant stop a leak?

Bathroom sealant can stop small leaks around sinks, baths and other surface joints, provided the gap isn't under pressure. It won't fix a burst pipe, structural crack or large hole, so bigger plumbing problems need a proper repair rather than another bead of silicone.

 

Should I remove old silicone sealant before applying new?

Yes, remove the old silicone before applying a fresh bead. New bathroom sealant won't bond properly to cured silicone, which can lead to peeling, trapped mould and hidden leaks.

 

How long does bathroom sealant typically last?

A properly applied sealant can last around 10 to 20 years, with quality silicone often lasting even longer. Its lifespan depends on surface preparation, movement, UV exposure and contact with chemicals. Apply it to a dirty or damp surface, though, and it could start failing within just a few years.
