Heavy duty sink
29th September 2026Lovely old style sink. Be warned, it is heavy! Would have been nice to have the choice of waste unit. Had to buy antique brass unit separately so left over stainless steel one.

FAQ's
Ceramic kitchen sinks come in several styles and configurations, but their material also affects how they should be used, cleaned and installed. These FAQs cover the main benefits, material differences and practical points to consider before ordering.
What are the benefits of a ceramic sink?
A ceramic kitchen sink has a hard, smooth glazed surface that resists everyday stains and surface scratches and is straightforward to wipe clean. Ceramic also handles normal kitchen heat well, although sudden temperature changes should be avoided.
Alongside these practical benefits, ceramic sinks come in a range of designs, from traditional Belfast models to more contemporary inset and undermount options.
What is the difference between ceramic, fireclay and porcelain sinks?
Ceramic is a broad term for products made from clay-based materials that are shaped, fired and usually glazed. Fireclay sinks use a clay and mineral mixture fired at a high temperature, while porcelain is another type of ceramic with its own composition and manufacturing process.
Do ceramic sinks chip or crack easily?
A properly supported ceramic sink should not chip or crack during normal use. However, its hard surface can be damaged if a heavy pan or another solid object is dropped into the bowl. Rapid temperature changes may also cause thermal shock, while poor support can place stress on the sink.
Can you put boiling water in a ceramic sink?
Ceramic sinks are generally heat resistant, but you should still avoid sudden and extreme changes in temperature. Do not assume that every ceramic sink can safely take boiling water or extremely hot cookware in all circumstances. To avoid this, allow hot pans to cool before placing them in the bowl and follow the manufacturer's guidance on boiling water and temperature limits for your chosen sink.
Does a ceramic kitchen sink need additional support?
Every sink must be supported according to its fitting instructions, but this is particularly important for heavy ceramic, Belfast and double bowl models. The cabinet or support frame must carry the sink securely, including the additional weight when the bowl contains water.
