Electric Radiators
Electric radiators let you warm individual rooms without needing a boiler or central heating pipework. They’re a handy option for flats, extensions, loft conversions and anywhere you don’t want the hassle of adding new pipework. With plenty of sizes, outputs and styles to choose from, it’s easy to find one that works for your room.
Start by working out how much heat your room needs. The right wattage will depend on things like room size, insulation, windows and external walls. Once you know the output you need, look at the wall space available. A vertical radiator can work well on a narrow wall, while a horizontal design gives you plenty of choice for wider spaces.
Many electric radiators come with thermostats, timers and programmable settings, while smart models can add Wi-Fi, app control and heating schedules. Think about how you actually want to use the radiator as well as its wattage and size, and check whether your chosen model plugs in or needs to be hardwired.

FAQ's
Choosing an electric radiator starts with working out how much heat your room needs, then finding a size and style that works with the space. These FAQs cover the main things to check before you buy, from wattage and positioning to materials, finishes and controls.
What wattage electric radiator do I need?
The wattage you need depends on how much heat your room requires. Room size, insulation, windows and external walls can all make a difference, so choosing purely by the physical size of the radiator isn’t enough. Work out the heat output your room needs first, then choose a radiator that meets it and fits the wall space available. For more help, read our guide to calculating BTU.
Should I choose a vertical or horizontal electric radiator?
Both can do a good job of heating a room, so the choice usually comes down to the wall space you have. Electric horizontal radiators work well on wider walls and in more traditional radiator positions. Vertical electric radiators make better use of narrow walls, so they can be handy when horizontal space is limited.
Where can I install an electric radiator?
Designer electric radiators can work in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, home offices and plenty of other spaces around the home. Where you put yours will depend on the wall space available, the heat output you need and how the radiator connects to the electricity supply.
For bathrooms, check that the radiator is suitable for bathroom use and can be fitted safely in the position you have in mind. You may also want to consider an electric towel radiator if you want to warm the room while keeping towels warm and dry. Always check the fitting instructions and use a qualified electrician where required.
Can I replace a standard radiator with an electric radiator?
Yes, in many cases you can replace a radiator connected to central heating with an electric model. You’ll need to make sure the new radiator has enough output for the room and that there’s a suitable electrical supply for it.
Fitting an electric radiator is different from swapping one central heating radiator for another, so check the installation requirements before removing your existing one.
What's the difference between aluminium and cast iron electric radiators?
Aluminium electric radiators are lighter and tend to have a more contemporary look. Cast iron models are heavier, bring a more traditional style and hold onto heat well.
